The National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE or NC4SE>HE) is a research centre established to facilitate the study of student equity policy and practice in Australian higher education and in related fields, and to lead the development of new knowledge in these fields. The centre is funded by the Australian Government's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and is hosted by the University of South Australia within the Hawke Research Institute.
Professor Trevor Gale is the National Centre's founding director. Profiles of all National Centre staff are available here.
The National Centre is developing an online open-access repository of equity research, policy and practice and a web-based 'equity exchange' to facilitate networks and information sharing among researchers, policy makers and practitioners in the field.
The National Centre's research agenda includes but is not limited to:
- post-compulsory education for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds
- higher education pathways, including second chance opportunities
- the interface between VET and higher education
- higher education and regional engagement
- higher education and students with disabilities.
Centre launch
The National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education was launched on 25 February 2009 by Emeritus Professor Denise Bradley in the Hawke Building, City West Campus. Prof Peter Høj, Prof Denise Bradley and Prof William Tierney (from the Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis at the University of Southern California) spoke at the launch.
